Basic Gardening Tips For Beginners

garden design ideas for your gardening

  • You have to gather a basket together with some strong hooks and wires since when all the ingredients are added, it becomes quite heavy.
  • Use a liner to line the basket with either cardboard or fresh moss.

  • Put a saucer at the bottom of the basket or whichever pot you choose to prevent the escape of water through drainage.

  • Make sure that you have plants that can live together. Should you decide to hang the basket in an area receiving enough sunlight, select only plants that thrive under sunlight.

  • The soil in the basket needs to be fed every week since nutrients are absorbed quickly. Use moisture-control compost containing slow-release plant food.

. This technique will last you for about six months.

Get basic gardening tools

  • The necessities. A necessity for any gardener is a pair of pruning shears. They will be used for trimming plants and shrubs and keeping them healthy through removing dead flowers and branches. Another tool which can be helpful when having bigger plants is a pair of loppers. Their long handle and big blade will help you easily trim bigger and more mature plants.
  • Digging and raking tools. To begin planting, a series of tools for digging and preparing soil will be necessary for you. For this purpose, you will need a spade, a trowel, and a garden fork.
  • Tools for watering. The most effective tools for this purpose are a garden hose and a watering can. A garden hose is ideal for heavy duty work like watering trees and already growing plants, however, the high pressure of water is not recommended for small plants and seedlings. In that case, use a watering can that comes with a rose attachment. Your young plants will appreciate it.
  • Pick the right plants

So, you have selected the type of garden that you would like to plant and also purchased the gardening tools. The next step is choosing the plants. As a beginner gardener who cannot resist going to the garden center to purchase anything you fancy without even considering the type of soil in your garden, which determines the type of plants, here are ways that you can know the type of soil that you have. You can either get a handful of soil from your garden and see if it has a sandy or clay-like feel. You can even go ahead and examine the neighbouring gardens to know what grows there well, or you can do a soil test to see the nutrient composition of your soil and its Ph level. With any of these ways, you can determine the plants that would thrive in your garden

    Improve the soil

For beginners who are just starting gardening, the first thing that one should do is add the compost to the soil for a depth of 8 to 12 inches (20-30 cm) using a fork or spade. It takes a few months for the compost to decompose. Thus, the best times to do this are winter and spring.

    Water plants correctly

Watering of the plant should be done in such a manner that it provides enough water for survival without causing the soil to become waterlogged. The best method to do this would be through slow watering that ensures penetration of the water deep into the soil. The perfect level of moisture in the soil should be found 2-3 inches below its surface.

Also, plants that are at different stages in their development will require different quantities of water.
